We made the most of a crisp, clear winter’s day to drive back to Royal Tunbridge Wells for a spot of window shopping and cake (a good combination in my opinion).
I
confess that I was tempted to return to Juliet's (café of the giant Victoria
Sponge), but I pushed on past the window display and headed to the Pantiles to
check out the available offerings.
I’ve
found the Pantiles a bit of a mixed bag in the past, and the selection of cafes
around the square a little disappointing. For such a beautiful and historic
setting I’ve usually come away wanting more.
And
so we happened upon Shrager’s, a delightful French patisserie with rich
tasting, perfectly prepared, colourful delicacies to tempt its customers.
I
selected a modest yet very tasty amandine tarte, and Ben chose a nut brownie. I
thought the selection was a little on the expensive side, but you are
paying for quality not quantity here (the Paris Brest is almost too perfect to
ignore). The service is attentive and the staff are all lovely - you are
looked after here.
The
café has a modest and conservative feel to it. It’s a bit like being in a shoot
from House and Garden magazine, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The
patisseries on offer are high quality, and this is reflected in the décor too.
There are nice touches throughout, including ornate candle holders on the
tables and the most divine smelling hand soap and moisturiser in the bathrooms.
So
if you’re ever promenading along the Pantiles and fancy a fantastical Parisian
patisserie, then pop into Shrager’s for a delectable delight.
