Haguelands Village (TN29 0JR)

My visit to Haguelands was driven by the desire to see alpacas. Disappointingly, there were no alpacas to be seen. I hope this is because they were tucked away somewhere warm and dry, sitting in front of a cosy fire drinking hot chocolate, in a setting akin to Mr Tumnus’ house from Narnia.

The farm also features a maize maze, but at the time of our visit the maize had been the victim of a grim reaper and the fields were bare.

We therefore had to content ourselves with the wares on offer at the farm shop. Although half the stalls were closed (the site is currently being renovated), the all-important café was open.

The café has a fantastic open kitchen, where the friendly staff busied themselves making a range of products from scratch.

The café itself was relatively austere and we were the first customers for the day on a rather damp Saturday morning. The décor is a little bland, not uncomfortable, but not a stand out. I think it could do with pimping out the farm theme a bit more.

We both ordered what we believed was warm apple and rhubarb crumble, served with cream. What we actually received was warm pear and ginger crumble, served with cream. Not necessarily a combination of flavours that I would normally lean towards, but it was delicious. The serving was generous… so much so that I couldn’t finish it all. The coffee was in the "fine" range.

Would I go back? Probably not, unless they offer afternoon tea with the alpacas. But if you’re in the area, and in need of sustenance, it’s not a bad stop.
